Chicago and its suburbs have invested significantly in bike trails, bike lanes, designated bike routes, and bike facilities.
The Chicago 2008 Bike Map provides a great overview of potential commute routes. There are several bike-able routes downtown, including the lakefront trail, Lincoln Avenue, and Elston Avenue.
Below is a sample commute route from Wilmette.
